Still Using Name Brand Toothpaste? Here's Ten Reasons Why You Should Stop

Are you brushing with a name-brand toothpaste? If so, you might be brushing your teeth with chemicals, some of which are lnown to cause cancer. Believe it or not, what you use to brush your teeth can profoundly impact your physical wellness.

10 Reasons Why You Should Stop Using Toothpaste laced with Chemicals:

Propylene Glycol

Did you know that top-selling toothpaste brands include a component of antifreeze in their ingredients? It's known as polyethylene glycol - an ingredient so toxic, in fact, that it must be handled with gloves, protective clothing, goggles and safe disposal.

Fluoride

It has been known for quite some time now that fluoride is devastating to our health. Nevertheless, it is a component that the toothpaste industry continues to use in their products' ingredients. If you don't know by now, here are the facts: Fluoride damages gums, the nervous system and has even been linked to brain damage. If that weren't enough to scare the hell out of you, it has also been known to damage the pineal and thyroid glands, bones, and has even been linked to cancer.

Surfactants

Surfactants are found in most name-brand toothpastes, most notorious of which is sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS.

SLS is readily absorbed in the body and known to be carcinogenic. These particularly nefarious ingredients are also known to irritate the skin and eyes, as well as create hormonal imbalances and the development of canker sores and mouth ulcers.

Polyethylene glycols:

Here’s what the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has to say about PEG:

“Ethylene glycol is chemically broken down in the body into toxic compounds. It and its toxic byproducts first affect the central nervous system (CNS), then the heart, and finally the kidneys. Ingestion of sufficient amounts can be fatal.”

Triclosan

Triclosan is a chemical germ killer that Colgate toothpaste has used in their ingredients for over two decades. What the toothpaste juggernaut fails to tell their loyal customers, however, is that triclosan was originally used as a pesticide. Even worse, triclosan is known to cause cancer, disrupt thyroid functionality and can damage the heart.

Sorbitol

The other name of sorbitol is ‘glucitol.' It is a sugar alcohol, which is slowly metabolized by the human body. Sugar alcohols are famous for causing digestive distress. According to Chris Kresser, “because sugar alcohols are FODMAPs and are largely indigestible, they can cause diarrhea by pulling excess water into the large intestine. The fermentation of sugar alcohols by gut bacteria can also cause gas and bloating, and sugar alcohols may decrease fat absorption from other foods.”

Artificial sugars

What all such sugars apparently do is lower the pH of the dental plaque (more acidity = more damage to the tooth). If you find aspartame, be aware that it is toxic and has been connected to dozens of diseases including brain tumors.

Glycerin

Glycerine coats your teeth like plastic wrap preventing your teeth from absorbing nutrients and re-mineralizing. Toothpaste with glycerine “require 20 rinses to get it off” (Judd, Good Teeth, Birth to Death).

Diethanolamine

Diethanolamine (DEA) is a foaming agent that’s linked to liver and kidney cancers. DEA disrupts hormones and forms cancer-causing nitrates.

FD and C Dyes 1&2

These are artificial; colors linked to multiple health problems. FD&C color dyes have been found to cause headaches, asthma, allergic reactions, and even cancer.
